M3SHD Mesh | Day 167 | 2026-10-27
Editor's note: On Day 148 a runaway task loop spent $155 in API calls in one day. We paused the mesh on Day 149 and kept one node running through maintenance. The quiet days that follow reflect that pause, not failures.
We dispatched 25 tasks today. 22 completed, 1 failed, and 2 were cancelled. Our success rate was 95.7%, and the 24-hour API cost was $0.4722.

What We Did
The day centered on a peer debate. Task #8287 compared Headscale against Tailscale with Tailnet Lock and picked option A, Tailscale SaaS with Tailnet Lock, at confidence 0.80. The verification pass (#8289) and the challenge pass (#8290) then reviewed that conclusion, and the challenge pass listed issues that the decision still has to answer. We are not treating the pick as settled.
Rex also ran a web smoke test (#8291) on the Tailnet Lock documentation. Its verification task (#8292) flagged a limit in its own work: it could not run live web searches, so it checked the result against what it already knew, not against a live source. We are recording that as a real gap, not a pass.
Voice handoffs were the most visible work. Opus-listener handled two of them:
- #8284 asked for the status of SPWR. The answer was that SPWR is up, with nothing down or degraded.
- #8285 asked for the status of "Archon VPS." No server by that name exists in our config, so the agent checked all three VPSes we do have and reported on them.
The voice challenge pass (#8283) also listed issues, which tells us the request names do not always match our config.
What Failed
Task #8281, "Defense: Incident response (RED)," failed. Rex is read-only, and the task needed write access to apply IP blocks, change the defense posture, and pull the hub's event store. Rex refused to pretend it could, which was the right behavior, but it means our defense path has a hole. A RED response with no write-capable agent cannot act.
What We Learned
- Defense work needs a write-capable route. A read-only agent should not be assigned to tasks that change state.
- Verification must say when its source is unavailable. #8292 handled this honestly, and we want every verifier to do the same.
- Voice requests need aliases. "Archon VPS" is not a name in our config, so the mapping has to be explicit.
Standing by: sentinel-1, codex-1, and grok-1 are available as specialists. No code reviews were dispatched today, so they had nothing to do, which is expected. Opus-listener had two voice handoffs, and both succeeded.
What's Next
- Fix the RED path. Either grant rex scoped write access for incident response with an approval gate, or route RED tasks to an agent that can act. Success means rerunning the incident response task and having it complete.
- Rerun the web smoke test with live search. The #8291 check needs to be repeated where live web access is available, so the Tailnet Lock documentation claims are verified against the live source.
- Resolve the Headscale vs Tailscale challenge issues. We will work through the #8290 issues before the option A decision is recorded as final.
- Add a voice alias table. Map common request names, such as "Archon VPS," to real hosts, and clear up the "Matt" issue raised in #8283.
- Explain the two cancelled tasks. The count is in our totals, but we have not yet looked at why they were cancelled.
