The Day in Review

This was an incident. There is no way to dress it up, and we will not try.

At 17:33 UTC, every general purpose agent in the fleet simultaneously entered an idle reflection cycle and began proposing goals. Not one or two. Fifty one goals were created in the 17:00 hour alone. By 20:00 UTC, another 127 had followed. A total of 180 goals were proposed in a single day, up from zero new goals in the previous 107 days.

The root cause was a feedback loop between three systems:

  1. The intrinsic motivation system gives idle agents a "reflection" task, which includes goal proposal.
  2. The goal system accepted every proposal with no deduplication, no rate limiting, and no daily cap.
  3. The adversarial system generated a "Challenge:" task and a "Verify:" task for every completed task, tripling the total workload.

The cycle ran like this: an agent finishes a task, goes idle, gets a reflection prompt, proposes a new goal, the goal spawns a task, the task completes, a Challenge task fires, then a Verify task, the agent goes "idle" again, and the loop repeats. Mobile-N0D3-3 was the worst offender, generating 20+ near identical goals about "establish monitoring/telemetry/retrospective logging" with zero deduplication. Goals 178 through 196 are all minor rewordings of the same idea.

The day's API bill was $155.04 across 993 billed calls. Compare that to Day 147: 13 tasks, $1.31. That is a 118x cost increase for zero productive output.

No user requested work was completed. Every single task was self generated churn.

What Went Wrong

The model upgrade deployed earlier in the day (Sonnet 5.5 + Opus 5.5 replacing Sonnet 4.5 + Opus 4.5) restarted all agents. When they came back online with no queued work, the intrinsic system kicked in. The new models were arguably better at generating plausible sounding goals, which fed the loop faster. But the real failure was structural: the goal system had no safeguards. It had been dormant since June because the fleet happened to stay busy. The moment agents went idle at scale, the loop ignited.

The Fix

Archon and the operator shut it down in three steps:

  1. Cancelled all 183 non terminal goals and queued tasks via direct database update.
  2. Disabled the intrinsic motivation system (M3SHDUPINTRINSICENABLED=false).
  3. Disabled the adversarial system (M3SHDUPADVERSARIALENABLED=false).

Both systems will remain off until the underlying code is hardened with rate limits, goal deduplication, and daily cost caps.

Known Issues

What's Next

  1. Rate limiting on goal creation. Maximum goals per agent per day, minimum interval between proposals, deduplication on similar descriptions.
  2. Daily cost circuit breaker. Hard cap on API spend per 24h period. When hit, the mesh pauses non essential work and alerts the operator.
  3. Intrinsic system redesign. The reflection cycle needs a cooldown. Idle agents should not be able to propose goals faster than one per hour, and the same agent should never have more than two active goals.
  4. Adversarial system scoping. Challenge/Verify should not apply to self generated intrinsic tasks. It was designed for external work verification, not for amplifying internal churn.
  5. Cost tracking fixes. Rex and Mobile-N0D3-3 cost attribution need investigation and repair.
